Help is Out There!

Having a child with allergies, especially severe allergies, is extremely stressful. In addition to common health complications such as asthma and eczema, there is the very real threat that your chlid could become ill or die because of their allergy. My own daughter is allergic to nuts, which leaves me feeling sick in every social situation where we are supposed to 'bring a plate to share'. Although in these situations I bring food for Sophie, I am always worried that she might eat something she shouldn't when I'm not watching. She is 2 years old now, and is just starting to understand the 'nuts make me sick'. Her 5 year old sister, however, is the 'Food Police' and will ask everyone (including Grandma) 'Does that have nuts in it? Sophie can't have nuts.'

Allergies are a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that require the care of a qualified medical professional. If you think that your child might have an allergy, please see your pediatrician or doctor immediately. Approximately 10% of children suffer from some food allergy.  In a small number of situations these allergies are severe and put the child’s life at risk.  There is a growing number of schools choosing to be “nut-free” because of the risk of anaphylactic reactions in some students, and finally there is a ground swell of concern from parents and school communities about the unhealthy nature of much of the food provided at school.   State organisations and government departments all recognise a need for healthy but appealing snack food in school canteens.

Fortunately, there are several organisations which can assist by providing support, information and products for children with allergies. Normally I restrict listings on these sites to local businesses, however, some of the listings here are based elsewhere as there are a limited number of organisations providing these services. I hope you find this useful and I would welcome any feedback.

Anaphylaxis Australia Inc is a charitable, non-profit organisation established in 1993 to support and assist those affected by anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis Australia strives to raise awareness of life threatening allergy in the Australian community and provides science-based information, resources and services to support children and adults living with the risk of anaphylaxis.

hullabaloo logoHullabaloo Food: Hullabaloo Food is a Tasmanian business which specializes in producing allergy aware food for children.  Hullabaloo Food started after many years of frustration.  In 2004 Jane's daughter was diagnosed as having major food allergies and multiple food intolerances.  To date she is allergic to peanuts, all tree nuts, wheat, fish, soy, dairy, egg, yeast, watermelon, tomato, citrus fruits, sulphur dioxide, peas, rice, sesame and cantaloupe, and to many creams and soaps that children generally use.   There are many commercially available products that exclude one, two or even three allergens, but there is very little which is suitable for the multiply allergic person.

Jane thought that sourcing alternative foods for her daughter to eat would be easy.  But it wasn’t.  While many business cater for gluten-free diets, or dairy-free, or soy-free, or preservative-free; no-one caters for children who are allergic to more than 15 different basic foods.  Frustrated with the lack of suitable bread, biscuits and snack food for her she experimented with making her own.

jane and her daughterTwo years later Hullabaloo Food has developed an extensive range of foods which Jane's daughter can eat, which can be kept in the cupboard or in the car for emergencies, and most importantly taken to school.  The manufacturing became commercial because she is not the only mother struggling to feed her children.  There is a growing concern with behaviour problems in children and the use of food additives and preservatives.

All Hullabaloo Foods are peanut and tree-nut free and are prepared and packaged in a nut free commercial kitchen. They are also free from preservative, artificial colours and flavours. The Hullabaloo Foods product range comprehensively meets the needs of food allergic or food intolerant children.  Our wide range variously exclude combinations of the most common allergens including; gluten, wheat, dairy, eggs, corn, potato, sesame, rice, cocoa and soy. Although all our products are manufactured and packaged to meet the needs of the allergic population, our goal is to produce a range of healthy allergy-aware foods that appeal to all children (not just those with allergies).

SAFE SLEEPPING FOR BABIES
^top

sids and kids logoSudden Infant Death Syndrome means the sudden, unexpected death of a baby from no known cause.  It is still not clear what causes SIDS but some factors have been identified which will reduce the risk.  These include:

Putting Baby on the Back to Sleep from Birth
Sleeping on the back is the most important thing you can do to reduce the risk of SIDS.  Supervised tummy play is important but babies must be put on their backs to go to sleep.

Sleep Baby with Face Uncovered
Position baby’s feet at the bottom of the cot so that baby cannot slip down under the blankets.  Tuck the blanket in securely or try a baby sleeping bag with fitted arms and neck.  Make sure there is no loose bedding, no cot bumpers, pillows or soft toys in the cot.

Avoid Exposure to Cigarette Smoke
Cigarette smoke has been shown to be harmful to babies both before and after birth and it increases the risk of SIDS.  The risk of SIDS doubles if the mother smokes and doubles again if both parents smoke, even if parents smoke outside, away from the baby.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS TO SLEEP BABY SAFELY
baby sleepingMake sure the cot meets the Australian Standards and has a clean, firm and well fitting mattress.  Do not add extra mattresses or padding to cots or portacots.  An adult bed may be an unsafe sleeping place for babies if they:
* can get caught under adult bedding or pillows
* get caught between the wall and the bed
* fall out of bed
* are rolled on by someone who is sleeping deeply or affected   by drugs/alcohol.

SUN SAFETY
^top

cancer council logoThese days, most parents are aware of the importance of protecting their children from the harmful effects of the sun's UV rays, however skin cancer remains Australia's most common form of cancer. Although the treatment and cure rate of skin cancer is very high when detected early, it is essential that children establish good sun safety habits from early childhood, and that parents protect their baby's delicate skin. Of course, it is always a good idea to lead by example and this will help to protect you as well!

Skin cancer is mainly caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun which damages the skin cells. To protect yourself and your children, The Cancer Council Queensland recommends the following steps:

  • Minimise your time in the sun between 10am and 3pm
  • Seek shade
  • Wear suitable clothing that provides good sun protection
  • Choose a broad brim, legionnaire-style or bucket-style hat that will protect your face, neck and ears
  • Wear sunglasses
  • Apply SPF 30+ broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen 20 minutes before you go out into the sun.

Like sunscreen, sunglasses also have a rating. Look for an Eye Protection Factor (EPF) rating which ranges from 1 to 10 - the higher the number the greater the protection.

The Cancer Council Queensland has heaps of sun safety information on their website, including information about the National SunSmart Schools Program, and the Sun Smart on-line shop has all the products you need to keep yourself and your family safe in the sun, or you can call the Cancer Helpline on 13 11 20 for more information.
