Music with Monica’s Early Learning Programs (MELP) for parents, their babies and young children aged 0 to 4 years are designed and run by postgraduate qualified Registered Music Therapists from the University of Queensland and Melbourne University. Through the use of live music, musical play, instrument play and musical games important aspects of childhood development are addressed. These include:
  • social skills (waiting, turn-taking, sharing, tolerance)
  • communication
  • fine and gross motor skills
  • emotional awareness and self-expression
  • self-confidence
  • pre-literacty and pre-numeracy skills
  • school readiness
Leaders in this field of research identify music for a young child as providing neurological stimulation creating an optimal state for learning. They also highlight music’s role as a comforter and source of excitement with the ability to affirm thoughts, actions and placement in a social group while building a child’s identity.
It’s not only your child who benefits from our music program, research also shows that your relationship with them does, too.Participating with your baby or young child can enhance your relationship and increase attachment and bonding. The fun and positive nature of music promotes and encourages positive parent-child interactions. Through the demonstration of techniques to use music when settling, transitioning, to illicit positive responses from your baby or young child, together we are building parenting skills and confidence. While there is this research base informing the progressive development of our MELP, we aim to keep the sessions light and fun in nature, interactive, inclusive and child-centred.
Each class is 45 minutes long and runs in line with the Qld public school terms.
No musical ability is necessary and everything you need is supplied.
