We were very excited to interview Jacques, a Gold Coast Kid with a great story to tell!
Jacques, what is “Kids on the Bench” and how did you get the chance to do this?
Kids on the Bench is a segment on Titans TV, where I got to interview a Titans Player before each home game in front of the crowd. I was offered the opportunity because I featured on the Titans Membership Web Portal (my Dad took some photos of me in my Titans gear and they used it along side William Zillman). I also featured in the Titans TV commercial that played throughout the year, so I sort of became the kid face of the Titans, and was therefore offered the opportunity to do this segment on Titans TV as well. It has been so awesome to get in front of all my hero’s – I can’t believe how lucky I am.
What was your favourite part of the experience?
My favourite part of the experience was getting to know each of the players. They all look so big and tough on the field, yet when I interviewed them they were all really funny and so friendly – some of them were more nervous than I was. My favourite interviews were with Matt Srama, Nate Myles, Greg Bird and Paul Carter. Nate Myles was certainly the funniest as he kept trying to distract me and make me laugh. I asked each player different questions and tried to get them to do impressions and sing songs, so it wasn’t just about the football – but if they didn’t sing, then I did.
What is your favourite team and player?
My favourite team is of course the Gold Coast Titans and my all time favourite player is Matt Srama.
What would you tell someone who would like to get the same opportunity you did?
If you love something enough make sure you are always around, I try and get to be with the players as much as possible, I think most of them know me by name now and sometimes dreams just come true – mine did – and maybe it will for them too, then make the most of every moment – it’s awesome!
What do you think is the most important thing a kid should do if they want to become a professional sportsman?
Have fun, listen and be coachable, really enjoy your sport and don’t take it all to seriously – it really is all about having fun with your mates.
What sports do you like to play the most?
Rugby League – I LOVE IT!
How old are you?
It was my birthday today, so I’m now 12.
What is your favourite colour?
Favourite colour is Titans Blue.
What is your favourite food?
I love Chinese, Pasta and Sushi.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I really want to be a professional footballer and play for the Gold Coast Titans, but if I don’t make it I’d really like to be in the media as a presenter or radio presenter – maybe a sports commentator.
What is your favourite song?
Currently my favourite song is Que Sera by Justice Crew
Would you rather be on the beach or hiking in the mountains?
That’s an easy one – playing on the beach is awesome, I love to swim and surf at every opportunity.
