Bushwalks: The Gold Coast Hinterland is full of some of the most amazing rainforest walks you can imagine. There are walks to suit most ages and fitness levels, for example, the Curtis Falls walk on Tamborine Mountain is only 400m (all uphill/downhill) and most people with moderate fitness levels enjoy it. Don't forget to tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to be back. |
| |
Get Some Culture: The Queensland Art Gallery has some wonderful programs for children which are free of charge. Take the train up and make a day of it. There is more information about this on our Music and the Arts page. |

Great Things to Do at Home: There are heaps of things you can do at home and most of them are cheaper than going anywhere (unfortunately having the children clean the entire house while you have a coffee and read a good book probably isn't going to be one of them). For younger children, try making some playdough and have a 'restaurant' with food made from playdough (use a recipe from a container of Cream of Tartar - if you want the kids to help make it, don't cook it but reduce the amount of water by about half). For older children, have a movie night at home, let the kids choose a DVD, microwave some popcorn and get the doonas out in the loungeroom - make it into a slumber party if you like and sleep in the loungeroom! |
| |
Visit your Local Library : About the only place where you can get something for nothing. It costs nothing to join your local library and you can borrow books, DVDs, CDs and sometimes puzzles. Most libraries also have a free storytime for young children and often craft classes as well (you usually need to book for these). For more information see our Libraries page. |

Go to the Park: When was the last time you went speeding down a slippery dip or flew along on a flying fox? Don't just take the kids to the park, join them. You might be surprised how much you enjoy it - and while you're there, get them to push you on the swings for a while. Gold Coast Kids will be adding park reviews soon - email info@goldcoastkids.com.au with your reviews please - but in the meantime, Gold Coast City Council has a list of park locations on their website. |
| |
Check out your local Playgroup : If you have children under 5, don't hesitate. Playgroups are great, you get adult conversation and your child gets to play with different toys and socialise with other children. It's also a great opportunity to get parenting advice from people with first-hand experience and help others! Cost: Each playgroup is different, usually $2-5 per visit. For more information see our Playgroups page. |
