GOMA – Gallery of Modern Art

The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA, is situated next to the Queensland Art Gallery at Southbank in Brisbane and focuses on the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The GOMA Children’s Art Centre is always developing interactive displays, events and books for children and families, making the gallery a fantastic place to visit with your Gold Coast Kids on a regular basis.

Exhibitions for Gold Coast Kids at GOMA

The Children’s Art Centre is permanently housed within the Gallery of Modern Art. Exhibitions and programs are often run across the Queensland Gallery’s two sites – The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and The Queensland Art Gallery. An annual touring program provided by the Children’s Art Centre also visits locations throughout regional Queensland, bringing modern art to those unable to access the amazing facility in Brisbane. Visiting exhibitions to the Children’s Art Gallery generally run for a couple of months at a time, with the Gallery often publishing and selling books associated with the displays in their gift shop.

Toddler Tuesdays at GOMA

Suitable for Gold Coast Kids aged 18 months to four years of age, the extremely popular GOMA Toddler Tuesday program is just fantastic! At one of two weekly sessions held for 45 minutes each at 10am and 11am, kids will concentrate on and engage with one Collection piece. Specifically designed games, creating and observing activities encourage children and their carers to explore and learn about the world of modern art in a relaxed and pleasurable environment. Bookings for Toddler Tuesdays are essential, so keep an eye out for the booking form on the GOMA Kids website before the beginning of each school term.

Getting to GOMA

Being so close to the Brisbane CBD, public transport options for getting to GOMA with your Gold Coast Kids are aplenty. Bus, train, CityCat and cross-river ferries all stop nearby to the Galleries. If travelling by car, there are three paid carpark options within the Cultural Centre precinct or you could try your luck finding a street park nearby. School holidays are always a great time to check out GOMA, with many free and low cost activities provided, but be prepared for lots of other families and limited carparking.

Facilities at GOMA

Both the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Art Gallery are extremely accessible for wheelchairs and Gold Coast Kids in prams. Lifts are available within each building. The best child-friendly café options at the Galleries are the GOMA Café Bistro on the riverfront and the QAG Café next to the fabulous sculpture gardens, which is great for Gold Coast Kids needing to burn off a little energy.  The GOMA Lounge Bar and GOMA Restaurant are lovely options for parents taking a break from excited Gold Coast Kids.
