The Spit, Southport

2

There are so many aspects to The Spit.

Driving down Seaworld Drive, you will notice the world famous Versace Hotel and Seaworld Theme Park on the left.  At the end of this drive, you can turn right, which after a short walk, will  take you to the main beach which is patrolled only during peak times.  You can paddle out and have a surf, take in the sunshine while sunbaking, try your hand at kite surfing, fish off the beach, breakwall or sand pumping jetty.  There are also walking tracks in the bushland behind.

Care must be taken at this beach as there are frequent swells, dumping surf and strong currents.

The Southport Seaway is the main navigation entrance for all boats.  Surfers and body boarders also use this passage to get to the surf beach located on the other side of the breakwall on South Stradbroke Island.

To the left as you are driving in, Doug Jennings Park is very popular to kick a footy around, have a picnic and relax with your family.

As you go around this park, there are many secluded little beaches.  These are well protected from the winds so very popular with families.  It does get busy, so best to get there early.  None of this area is patrolled so due care is a must.  Jet skiers also find this area very popular.

There is also a boat ramp just down from Doug Jennings Park.

There is a kiosk which sells drinks, icecreams, burgers and many other delights to keep those little and big Gold Coast Kids well fed or you can grab some fresh seafood from the co-op on the drive in along Seaworld Drive.

You could spend a full day out here relaxing and watching the boats come and go through the seaway.

    To whoever this may concern,

My name is Lachie Griffiths, I’m in Grade 10 and Im from Emmanuel College. We are doing a project on the pollution on the southport spit. What are the main areas that you see the pollution and what type of pollution is it. Also does the population of litter change throughout the seasons?

    Thx lachie
