  Totally Toddlers

Toddlers. After teenagers they must be the most amazing, frustrating people alive. Not quite children, but no longer babies, they have the ability to do so many things without the sense of danger or depth perception that will later stop them from walking off the top of a playground platform. During this stage your baby starts to walk and talk, but often also the stage that brings tantrums as they strive for independence.

Toddlers are busy little people, and it is a joy to get out and find new experiences for your toddler, especially when it helps them to further develop their physical and social skills.

QUEENSLAND ART GALLERY'S TODDLER TUESDAY
^top

Queensland Art Gallery runs a 'Toddler Tuesday' program on Tuesdays at 10.00am and 11.00am. This popular program introduces young children to works in the Gallery's Collection. Bookings are required as number are limited. Plan in advance as this program can be booked out well in advance! For bookings and more information telephone: 07 3840 7255 or visit www.qag.qld.gov.au/kids . I know this is in Brisbane, but it is a great program and worth the drive. Please note: take a change of clothes for your child - we decided to have lunch afterwards and my daughter had an inpromptu swim in the pond near the cafe. Thankfully I had a change of clothes and the Gallery staff were great, very quick to provide a big fluffy towel! (Keer)

LIBRARIES

Your local library is a great place to take your toddler (provided they are not in that 'throw all the books off the shelves' stage). You can introduce them to the wonderful world of borrowing books, and most libraries have story time or craft sessions for children. Take advantage of this free service.

MUSIC, DANCE AND GYM SESSIONS

Yes, for your toddler, not for you! Young children love moving to music and climbing so music and dance sessions are ideal for this age group. Gym sessions designed for toddlers are fun for parents and children and you will need to assist your toddler with most of the activities.

STARTNOW: Sports birthday parties – Swimming coaching (at your pool) – Tennis coaching (from 3yo) – Special sports program for preschoolers. Telephone Tom on 0409 469 398.

PARKS

These are two things that are almost essential to me as a parent of young children. Luckily we have always had a good sized backyard, but even so it is great to get out for a walk into the fresh air and let your youngster play at the park. Unfortunately, most parks are not really suited to toddlers and they need a lot of supervision on the equipment, but it is a great way for your child to challenge themselves. Keep watching Gold Coast Kids for more information about parks as we will include reviews later in the year with recommended ages for various parks.

PLAYGROUPS- for more information go to our Playgroup page

What is Playgroup? A Playgroup is a group of mums, dads, grandparents and caregivers who meet together each week with their babies, toddlers and preschoolers for interaction and fun. Parents and caregivers work together to provide their babies and young children with opportunities to learn through play.

Why go to a Playgroup? Children under five are going through a stage of rapid brain and skill development. For optimum development your young child needs a stimulating environment to play and learn. Playgroups offer babies, toddlers and young children a wide variety of early leaning experiences. It’s a great way for your child to learn about the world, make friends and develop social skills. Playgroup also gives mums, dads, grandparents and caregivers a chance to meet and share ideas and experiences. Many long-term friendships begin at Playgroup.

Playgroups are usually held once a week for a two hour session, and can be found in a variety of venues such as community and neighbourhood centres, council halls, preschools, church hall and people’s homes. You may be a mum, dad, caregiver, grandparent or family member – everyone is welcome. Playgroups are as different as the people in them. There is a Playgroup that is just right for you!

To start or join an existing Playgroup in your local area, contact the Queensland Playgroup Centre on 1800 171 882 (toll free), or visit Playgroup Queensland's website www.playgroupaustralia.com.au.

SWIMMING LESSONS

Swimming lessons are available at most council swimming pools for children of all ages. Most toddlers will need someone in the water with them to help so be prepared to get wet! Watch Gold Coast Kids for more information about swimming lessons and water safety later this year.
